Diet and Exercise
Answers to Hillary's Question
Dear Hilary;
See Michael Murray's excellent book How to Prevent and Treat Cancer with Natural Medicine for an excellent discussion of cancer and how it can be prevented, and what steps to take to help cure or ameliorate it if you get it.
Pat Quillen's Beating Cancer With Nutrition is another must read for people concerned about cancer and the many issues surrounding it.
Note: Primitive cultures eating 'natural' diets and foods have VERY low rates of all kinds of cancer and other 'western' diseases. Go figure.

You can start by informing the public about the dangers of breast cancer. When people realize that breast cancer is a silent killer, they will wake up and start taking decisive action. People tend to be egocentric and need to know how breast cancer can affect themselves or their loved ones.
Also, lobbying for alternative medicines that offer a new approach to treatment can prove influential in the prevention of breast cancer. There are so many different avenues that our scientists have not been able to explore, at least not fully. Giving them the financial backing that they need could help to save lives.
Decrease the reliance in this country of artificial (hormonal) birth control among women. Teach more abstinence education, natural family planning and find less invasive methods of birth control. Women who are on hormonal birth control have a substantially higher risk of breast cancer than women who use other methods of birth control like barrier methods and natural family planning.
Education of women and immigrants and those more at risk, and informing young girls early on the high risk now known for drinking and smoking at the high increase of raising the risk of breast and colon cancer in women.
By stopping the use of nuke power ;-)
Do you know who many nuke plants we live by in the US, that are in operation or shut down?
Do you know how many MORE nuke WASTE sites Americans live by?
Do you know about the people who live near the sites that nuke bombs were tested?
Not that many people know about MS bomb test site, but I swear my Grandma got cancer from that. I doubt the gov made sure the ground water was ok.
I think if we cleaned up our act with all the nuke stuff, and also cleaned up our act with all the smog and other particle pollution in the air, we would HAVE less cancer by preventing outrageous environmental conditions.
After all it's not just us who get polluted, our air, our food, and then we take in those concentrated amounts.
Prevention is a good thing to work towards, but it'll only be prevented if everyone does their part. A healthy diet will only take you so far if you have to breathe in thick smog everyday.
Most of my Family in TX has health problems; my mother moved away from that... she's the most healthiest one so far. While the rest are getting all kinds of cancers, including reoccurring breast cancer. My Aunt has so far had Breast Cancer 5 times!!! That's not counting the two times she had ovarian cancer either.
The reason DNA has a lot to do with it, is because we messed up our DNA by messing up our environment, and now we're blaming DNA and nature when we should be blaming our selves. After all these mutations are passed down to new generations, it just seems like our DNA gene pool isn't great, but at one point human's DNA was good maybe not perfect but it was good and healthy. Then we began damaging our own selves. Don't let know one fool you of that.
I think people need to give stem cell research a chance, though it may sound gruesome to some I think that if we perfect stem cell regeneration, we may be able to just remove whole body parts affected by cancer and replace it with a stem cell produced body parts.
P.S. to those pro-life people there are other sources of stem cells besides embryos, recent research suggest that there are large amounts of stem cells in fat, so get whenever you get lipo suctioned donate your fat to science!
Improve our healthcare system and make preventative care more accessible than it is. Most people don't even go to the doctor unless they are already ill because it's too expensive or too inconvenient. Our nation's healthcare is a joke and until it gets better, we need to learn to take better care of ourselves on our own through diet and exercise. Healthy food needs to be as readily and affordably available as McDonald's!! Physical education and nutrition classes should be taught in schools so our kids grow up understanding the importance of these things on our health. We also need better, cleaner fuels in order to stop the pumping of further harmful chemicals into the air.
Education and research. I'm not certain breast cancer will ever be eradicated. How much more money can we pump into research? How far have we got? For all I know a cure may already have been found, but for some reason the results are kept secret, because the drug companies are vying for the rights. I'm not trying to be a smart a** here, just realistic. I had breast cancer 12 years ago this year and it was the worst time of my life. I was fortunate to have a lot of support from my family and my work place (I was in the Canadian military)
The thing is all this money is going to research, when lots of women are struggling to be able to afford the drugs necessary for treating and minimizing the effects of those drugs. In the end breast cancer will take it's toll and what will we be left with?
We do our best. The researchers are doing what they can, but they can only work so fast. Well, enough ranting and raving. Have a good day. Cheers =)
Breast cancer is one of those diseases that emerge when other ailments are brought under control, such as many communicable diseases that a century ago was the leading causes of death. In many ways, the struggle to find cures for diseases of environmental or genetic origin (cancer, along with heart disease and Alzheimer's) needs to be dealt with in a similar fashion.
Much like the development of germ theory for communicable diseases, we need to stress research into the causes of breast cancer. We tend to know what factors are related to the disease, based on correlation studies over the last several decades, but the actual causes are still primarily in the theoretical stages. That is, we need to learn why the cancer actually occurs beyond a general description.
This will involve the work of many people. Unlike medical pioneers that worked out cures for polio and smallpox, cancer is something that will require the input of many disciplines. An emphasis on the results should be made, and the stress on who actually is credited for those results needs to be reduced. Otherwise, the intercommunication between the various fields of study will be hindered by this vanity.
Given that breast cancer is likely due to environment and genetics, there will probably be no way to eliminate those factors without either demolishing society as we know it or a massive eugenics programme. Instead, learning which factor contributes to the disease will provide a means by which a person can have their bodies become resistant to cancer. We will only know this once we fully understand the disease; much like learning of antibodies was a result of germ theory.
Breast cancer is a horrible disease, especially since it destroys lives, including the life of a good friend of mine. We have advanced very well in terms of combating the disease, with survival rates increasing all the time. Now we must come together as a society and focus on learning why it happens at all and how we might prevent it from ever reaching the point of needing treatment, and not focus on individual achievement.
Thank you, Madam Senator, for your excellent question.
We can encourage women to have babies in their early years instead of pursuing careers. We know that early pregnancy protects women against breast cancer.
We can start by making health care free to everyone in need. sure a new mother has Medicaid until a few weeks after a baby is born, but a year from then cant afford yearly checkup, so what good is it if there are no mothers to raise the children? you made famous the quote" it takes a village:" well you are right. it also takes a nation, maybe put less effort into war and more into healthcare. It’s not rocket science.
By Teaching Young Women at a very early age to take Good Care of themselves. We are asking these questions as if we could possibly take care of everyone. What needs to be said and done is to teach people to take good care of themselves with diet and exercise. Those 2 things help to cure most everything out there. With a Strong emphasis on Self Care , and Prevention in the schools and in public we could change the way society runs now. Violence and crime would decrease if people took better care of themselves. I also agree with the fact that alternative medicine needs to be more accepted and also paid for by the insurance companies. Massage therapy alone helps with so many problems. It should be a requirement once a week for all!! The world would be such a better place. Can you make that happen Hillary??? P.S. You have my vote for President in 2008! YOU GO GIRL!!!!
In accordance with some Japan medication book; women avoid to put on eyers ring, necklace, hand ornaments will certain percentage avoid from breast, womb cancer. Some of the experts said too many female hormone also cause cancer. Acuminate too many poison such as cigarette, car pollution, high temperature oil burning or burning fat of animal in bar-be-que. etc.
Keep yourself always happy. Early sleep and early wake up . sunbath under the sun early in the morning, not noon, not evening. Eat just good enough not full. Protein cannot be more than 150 gm/day. Give up worry, waiting result, planning tomorrow, release pressure. If you can do this way, there is some document in Chinese history showing some people had been long life as 250 years of ages.
Improved diet & exercise. Less fat in our food. Improved production of our food with little or no chemicals added to our meat, vegetables, and fruits. Have more organic grown food that does not require pesticides.
More time for leisure to create a peaceful time for oneself. There's too much stress in our fast-paced society that we're not taking the time to take care of our mind & body. We work too much that there's not enough time to rest, relax, and rejuvenate.
Our body is just too stressed from overloading. So, it's time that we put up our feet and relax more often from our hectic lives. Life is too short so we have to make time for ourselves first and work secondary.
Dear Hilary, You can prevent breast cancer, by more education. Students, and other people, need to know the importance of going to a doctor for a check up. You could also give donations to research centers, after all, if anyone can prevent cancer, it's them. By giving more money, they can focus on breast cancer and try to find a solution. A better social system is also required. People with breast cancer in an early stage, but who don't have enough money for the medication and treatment, need help, financial help. Other countries, e.g. Belgium, give their inhabitants a certain amount of money back if they have to pay high medical bills or even medication.
You should think about that, after all, we are talking about the lives of many people.
Three words: stem cell research.
Women/girls need to do a self breast exam once a month so if there are any lumps it can be caught early.
Mammograms also need to be made available to women of any age. Breast cancer isn't only in women who are past 35 - it can happen at any age. mammograms also need to be made available to the poor and those with no health insurance.
I don't thing breast cancer can ever be eradicated but death can be prevented with the proper care.
By educating the women's today about breast cancer (what ways to prevent it, how deadly and how serious breast cancer is). We can ask the help of media to disseminate information especially nowadays media(TV, radio, newspaper) are number one source of information, we can also have seminars in different schools/universities, and community can organize a seminar about it or a forum. Women should be taught how to do BSE(Breast Self Examination) properly and tell them how important BSE is and it should be done monthly. Of course, the other breast examination like mammogram, should be stress also.
Also by supporting people who are doing research to cure cancer. Give them enough funds so that they can study, experiment and research more about it, maybe someday they'll find a way to cure cancer.
Well it would be nice if mammograms didn't cost so much. Then maybe more women could have them done. Which would be a good start in detecting it sooner. I am a caregiver for my Mother which means no insurance, no Medicaid which means I can't afford them. Small towns like I live in don't have free clinics or anything to help people with my circumstances. It all as to do with early detection. Hope you find a solution to help so many people.. Thank You, Judy
Being that susceptibility to cancer is hereditary and there is really no prevention of that, I don't see how, with today's technology, we can actually PREVENT it but I think the best thing that can be done is to start educating about self-exams in high school. Breast cancer can be detected early on if only everyone knew how and set aside the time to check ones self every month. It's not a prevention but early intervention can lower casualties numerously. I also think if we could have more doctors set aside more times that they could give a free or reduced rate screening for breast cancer, like many places do cholesterol screening, it would be very beneficial.
To prevent and someday eradicate breast cancer we need to fund research of all types, including stem cell. We need to find the exact cause of this cancer and once we find the cause, fund a search for a cure.
Since this cancer has many risk factors, some
controllable, others not, we need to educate the public on prevention, what can be done to prevent or stop this disease by controlling the risk factors which we can.
The onus should not only be on the government but also on the individuals. Your Government is already taxed when it comes to funds. The public should support this cause and give freely to fund it's prevention and cure.
We have really come a long way in cancer prevention of many types, Senator.
We did so because we made strong and continuing efforts to inform people to offer donations, we adopted several methods of government-led legislation to allow more funding and research to be done, and we set up several institutions nationwide designed to continue the research.
Inform, fund and research. It's almost like building blocks, taken one step at a time. The honest-to-God blueprint to eliminate every disease known to mankind.
If we all just DID this... :-( We rely so heavily on the pharmaceuticals offering the treatments, we forget about trying to cure anything. Does anyone stop to think if we didn't spend so much money on pills and medicines for treatments, we could conceivably fund every major research center indefinitely?
I know we need medicine, but if only we could subsidize pharmaceutical spending, and put what we save back into research somehow.
I would certainly feel better when my cousin spent $210 a month for her diabetes medicine, if I knew at least a part of that money was going towards research of diabetes. :-)
I really hope I put forth some good ideas, and God bless.
It is not possible to modify certain risk factors for breast cancer, such as family history and genetics. However, I think our society could take more responsibility for educating women regarding modifiable risk factors.
There are already private organizations that offer community health services and education. Some organizations even offer free mammography during this month of October. However, private organizations can only do so much.
Shouldn't more government funding be directed toward research and education? What about increasing federal funding for educational programs, preventive screening exams, and mammograms for the uninsured? Even with the CDC's "National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program" (NBCCEDP),which offers free or low-cost screening, there are women who, for whatever reason, are not having yearly mammograms. Perhaps education and wider community outreach would help?
Even though the incidence of breast cancer is higher among Caucasian women, the mortality rate is higher among African Americans (American Cancer Society 2004). This disparity must be addressed by more effective educational, screening, and treatment programs.
And another post addressed the issue of the proven link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer. Below I have provided a link from the American Cancer Society with information regarding the research findings. Women need to be made aware of the link between hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives, and breast cancer. We deserve to know about ALL the possible (but poorly publicized) risks that exist in taking certain medications.

First of all, it is an Honor to be able to somehow "chat" with you, the most likely next and first woman President of the most powerful country of the world, for the last century, and hopefully the current one, even if it's only a question that you probably will never read, for obvious reasons (not complaining).
It's not my custom to respond a question with question but it's a must, otherwise this could end up being a long answer. So, do we know the causes of breast cancer? Have we aimed the batteries against the cause rather than the effects? What the results have been or what is the outcome of this effort? Do you think that by raising taxes on cigarettes is an effective deterrent to smoking?
What we eat is affecting us all, so would you, if it was in your power, take radical measures for a radical problem?
Politicians justify the taking of drastic measures when they are sold the idea of urgency by the lobbyists or by real threats.
Is this a real threat? Do you really care? I had to make the question although I know you do care. Well Senator, you're the woman ( I was going to say man, you know force of habit) this great country needs.( did I make any sense to you??)
Treat it systematically. YOU COULD ALSO SEE ABOUT DR. RIFE'S TREATMENT.
Hillary for President.
Drink green tea! It contains anti-oxidants which help to prevent cancer. It's also good for rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol levels, cardiovascular disease, infection and impaired immune function, along with bacteria destroying abilities which can prevent food poisoning. It can even help to prevent tooth decay because as the bacteria-destroying abilities can kill the bacteria which cause dental plaque.
We need to find the source of the development of cancer cells.
Considering all the hormone additives our government allows in our food, and all the hormone therapy women take for everything from birth control to menopause, knowledge of the safety or the lack thereof in what we put in our bodies will empower us a great deal in seeking a cure.
